LAHORE, Oct 13: The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) plans to launch a project for issuing computerized birth certificates.

According to Nadra officials, the plan was aimed at ending preparation of bogus domiciles that the people used to gain advantages in education and employment.

Meanwhile, the centres opened by Nadra for swift supply of computerized National Identity Cards (NICs) have prolonged the period required for delivery of cards through the normal procedure, the official sources said.

Computerized NICs were earlier delivered to the people through the normal procedure within three months. However, after establishment of Swift Registration Centres, the period has been extended to at least six months.

Similarly, those who pay Rs35 for delivery within 12 days are being furnished the cards after a month.

The delivery period is likely to increase, as more people book their NICs through the Swift Centres. The authority is planning to open more of these centres.

The authority had introduced the facility without increasing its capacity to print the cards, the sources said. Currently, less than 90,000 cards were produced daily at Nadra’s printing facility in Islamabad, the officials said.
