LAHORE, March 22: Robbers allegedly shot at and injured an employee of a money exchange company and took away cash including foreign currency worth over Rs15 million in Gulberg on Tuesday.

Reports said Muhammad Younis, Sajid and Danyal, employees of Mahmood Money Changers near Hafeez Center, drew Rs7 million and currency in pound and Euro from a bank and were returning to the company office.

Quoting Rahat Mahmood, owner of the company, the police said when they reached Gulberg’s Main Boulevard near Hafeez Center, two armed motorcyclists snatched the bag carrying the money at gunpoint. On resistance, one of the assailants opened fire and injured Younis. They made good their escape in no time.

Gulberg SHO Abid Rasheed had suspicion about the employees of the company, saying handling of staggering amount in a casual manner was beyond belief.

The money should be transported in a safe vehicle with armed guards instead of a motorcycle, he said. He further claimed that Younis suffered injuries as he fell from the motorcycle.

Asked what about the gunfire some witnesses and shopkeepers heard, Mr Rasheed said it was a “friendly fire” which further created doubt about the incident. He said a case had been registered against unknown robbers. Later, traders held a protest demonstration against the Gulberg police which, they said, reached the crime spot too late.

Reports said locals spotted the body of the 11-year-old boy in a plot near Usmania Colony and informed the police.

The police said the boy, yet to be identified, was brutally murdered. They said it seemed that the suspects raped him and then slit open his throat with a sharp-edged weapon.

A police official said the investigators also found multiple wounds on the deceased’s belly and other body parts.

The body was shifted to the city morgue for autopsy.

SUICIDE: A father of three committed suicide by taking poison in Raiwind on Tuesday.

Quoting the family, police said 35-year old Muhammad Khalid was jobless for the last some months.

Khalid’s wife Rabia told the police that he took this extreme step after he saw his children crying for food. She said her children were hungry for the last two days and her husband had not even a penny to buy them food.
