QUETTA: Seven Frontier Works Organisation personnel and three labourers were killed and two others injured when armed men attacked an FWO camp in Palery area of Gwadar district, near the Iranian border, on Monday.

The FWO and the National Highway Authority are carrying out work on a road linking the border town of Palery with the Makran Coastal Highway.

Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani told Dawn that eight armed men riding four motorcycles opened fire at FWO labourers sitting on the roadside near the camp after completing their work.

He said the armed men used automatic weapons for attacking the camp and all 10 people died on the spot.

The assailants escaped after carrying out the attack.

Law enforcement personnel took the bodies and the injured to hospital in Gwadar. Sources said that one passer-by was also killed in rocket attacks and firing on the camp.

The local administration, however, denied killing of a passer-by and did not confirm firing of rockets on the camp.

Gwadar assistant commissioner Talha Mohammad said only 10 people were killed in the attack.

Law enforcement personnel launched a search operation in the area, but no one was arrested.
