RAWALPINDI, March 15: Dr Shahbaz Anjum, former general manager Sihala slaughterhouse, was convicted by the Anti-Corruption Court here on Tuesday of taking bribe from a butcher. Special Judge Ant-Corruption Court Malik Nazeer Ahmed handed down three-year rigorous imprisonment to Dr Anjum for taking bribe with Rs10, 000 as fine and one and a half years rigorous imprisonment and Rs5,000 for misusing his authority.

The former GM of the slaughterhouse was booked by anti-corruption establishment Rawalpindi on August 27 last year as he received Rs100, 000 as bribe from a butcher Qaiser Aziz Qureshi for clearing his meat for sale.

The judge in his verdict said that he took a lenient view as the convicted official had unblemished past career.

The official was arrested by the ACE staff from his house as he took the marked currency notes from the butcher.

The complaining butcher informed the ACE that Dr Anjum had also demanded money earlier to clear the meat for human consumption and if any butcher did not accede to his demands, the GM implicated them in false cases of selling unhealthy meat.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
