HYDERABAD, March 15: Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) of Sindh, Ghulam Qadir Thebo, claimed here on Tuesday that without police operation conducted at the Hyderabad Central Jail on Tuesday, prisoners' indiscipline there could have led to a jail-break.
Talking to Dawn on phone from Karachi, the IGP said: “Searches have to be conducted after every fortnight, even otherwise under directives of Sindh High Court.”He said that such a search operation had been due for over a decade but it was not done. He said that many banned articles were found during the operation.
“Searches are permissible under Prisons Rules, and, therefore, are not unusual,” Mr Thebo said.
He said that prisoners resisted police search which led to a law and order situation. “The prisoners had crossed all limits and there was an imminent threat of jail-break. Today's action was necessary to prevent it [jailbreak]”, he asserted.
When asked how these 'banned articles' had been smuggle into jail premises, the IGP said: “It's a long story. Nobody look into the fact as that problems are created only in Hyderabad or Larkana jails and not in Nara special prison in Hyderabad”. He said that trouble-making prisoners would be segregated and shifted to other jails in the province.
