FAISALABAD: National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) won the 58th National Hockey Championship after beating Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in the final at the Faisalabad Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.

NBP edged out PIA 4-3.

The goals for the champions were scored by Mohammad Atiq (10th min), Mohammad Tauseeq (41st and 48th mins) and Yasir Shabbir (43rd min).

For the runners-up, the goals came through Yasir Islam (41st min), Zaheer Ahmed (49th min) and Ihsanullah (54th min).

Earlier, the third-position match was won by Wapda when they beat Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) 6-4.

Waqas Sharif scored a hat-trick for Wapda when he found the net in the sixth, 25th and 49th minutes with Sohail Abbas (27th min), Mohammad Imran (32nd min) and Rehan Butt (66th min) adding one each to complete the tally.

For SSGC, Shakeel Abbasi (14th and 51st mins) scored two goals with Zeeshan (59th min) and Arsalan Haider Sherazi (61st min) adding one each.

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Qasim Zia, the chief guest at the final, distributed the trophies, shields and cash prizes to the teams and players along with the other dignitaries, including Secretary Asif Bajwa, national coach Michel van den Heuvel, who were also present on the occasion.

PIA captain Shafqat Rasool was declared the best player of the tournament.Agencies
