RIYADH, Oct 2: Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia on Wednesday condemned a US congressional bill recognizing Israeli-occupied Al Quds as the Jewish state’s capital as contravening international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
The Saudi Press Agency quoted a spokesman as saying that the bill is “in contradiction with US policy” in the region.
Saudi Arabia “followed with deep concern and discomfort the news about the bill issued by the US Congress ... which recognizes Jerusalem (Al Quds) “ as Israel’s capital, the spokesman said.
The kingdom “sees this decision as contravening international law and violating security council resolutions, including Resolutions 252 of 1968 and 267 of 1969 ... which call for reversing all measures that could change the status quo in Jerusalem,” the spokesman added.
IRANIAN FM: Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi termed the Congress move a blatant insult to Muslim countries and a provocation.
“This is a blatant insult to Muslim countries and shows the US is profiteering from the current situation”, Kharazi was quoted by state radio as saying.
RUSSIA: Moscow criticized the US Congress’s decision, saying no unilateral decisions should be taken that would encroach on future negotiations over the status of the city.
“A solution to the problem of Jerusalem’s status must be found in the framework of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The four mediators (Russia, United States, the United Nations and the European Union) are currently working out a framework for a solution which is intended to include the status of Jerusalem,” the ministry added.—AFP
