Pakistan is set to participate in the first South Asian Federation Winter Games, which get underway at the Indian ski resort of Auli, on Friday.

A 25- member team, led by veteran skier Javed Iqbal left for India on Wednesday. Iqbal is heading the team as the Chef d’mission, while Group Captain Sohail Naeem will be the coach.

Pakistan’s first winter Olympian Muhammad Abbas is part of the 20-member squad of skiers, which also includes experienced skiers Sher Afzal and Sawar Khan and rookies Mir Nawaz Junior and Muhammad Karim. Three girls, Amna Wali, Fatima Sohail and Ifrah Wali are also part of the squad.

While Pakistan will be pinning medal hopes in the Alpine skiing events (slalom and giant slalom), a number of young skiers will also participate in cross-country skiing.
