RAWALPINDI, Dec 29: The guard of a moneychanger on Wednesday foiled a robbery attempt near Golf Club on Jhelum Road and gunned down a robber and injured his accomplice.

Police chief of the city Mukhtar Ahmed Gondal praised the bravery of the security guard and promised to reward him.

Though the area is heavily guarded by police and Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are installed on nearby government buildings, two of the accomplices of the robbers managed to escape.

The suspect who was gunned down was identified as Razaullah, 25, and his injured accomplice was named Mohammad Sajid Shah, 30.

Witnesses told the police that Shahzad Butt, a moneychanger, along with his driver Riasat Ali and gunman Abdul Haq, was carrying Rs1.2 million when the suspects hit their vehicle with his car, forcing it to stop near the Golf Club. One of the suspects then got out of his car and forced the moneychanger to give up the cash bag.

The witness said at that moment the moneychanger's security guard opened fire on the armed man.

On hearing the gunshots, one of his accomplices appeared on the scene and tried to challenge the moneychanger.

However, he also had to face resistance from the guard and was badly injured. The other two suspects, on seeing the fate of their associates, escaped from the scene.
