ISLAMABAD, Nov 11: The western media is obsessed with Pakistan’s nuclear programme, the former senate chairman, Wasim Sajjad, said.

“It has repeatedly been assured that Pakistan’s nuclear programme is in safe hands. Our command and control system is well organized and there are no chances of misuse and stealing of nuclear assets”, Mr Sajjad said.

About the visit of President Gen Pervez Musharraf to the US, he said the main focus during his visit would be the situation in Afghanistan.

He said President Musharraf had repeatedly called for targeted bombing, and also urged the US to stop attacks during Ramazan. He pointed out that this demand had been well received and supported in France.

He will also inform friendly countries about Pakistan’s problems, particularly, those regarding refugees, war and the tension at the Indian and Afghan borders, Mr Sajjad added.

He said the president would also reassure the US of Pakistan’s support on the issue of terrorism.

Mr Sajjad said: “Pakistan wants friendly countries to redress its economic difficulties, refugee problem and other security matters.”

“As far as the US are concerned, they thought the campaign will soon end, and a new government set up in Afghanistan”, he added.

Mr Sajjad said as far a broad-based government was concerned, it would be good for Afghanistan as there was a big ethnic divide in the country.

“Such a government is necessary for peace and stability”, he added.—PPI
