RAWALPINDI, Sept 21: A 21-member delegation of locals from Morgah, which had approached Senior Superintendent of Police Syed Moravat Shah with a complaint against the highhandedness of police on late Friday evening, was detained at Civil Lines police station for a night on the SSP’s orders.

The detainees, including a union council Nazim, were released on Saturday morning on the intervention of District Nazim Raja Tariq Kiani and local politicians.

A probe has been initiated into the incident. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rana Shahid is the inquiry officer.

The locals, while narrating the incident, said on late Friday evening, a constable patrolling the Morgah area, allegedly harassed some oil-tanker drivers, which led to a brawl between them.

Later, a delegation, headed by Union Council Nazim Mirza Mohammad Shafiq, approached the police post in the area to complain against the incident. Heated discussion ensued, leading to a clash between the police and the complainants, which left six people injured.

The delegation then went to the residence of superintendent of police (city), but found no one ready to hear their grievances. They later proceeded to the SSP’s residence to record their protest, but the officer, instead of hearing their complaint, ordered to put them behind the bars.

However, after the district Nazim’s intervention, the detained persons were released in the morning and the constable, involved in the brawl, was suspended.

Meanwhile, the union council Nazim, councillors and people of the area have criticized the district Nazim for, what they said, siding with the police rather than supporting them. They said they felt disappointed and humiliated because the Nazim did not take stern action against the police for their highhandedness.
