JHANG, Sept 18: A Unicef team will probe into the ‘failure’ of the anti-polio vaccination campaign in the Jhang district.

Sources said that two senior officials of the Unicef would reach Jhang in a couple of days.

The fund had received a large number of complaints that the health department authorities concerned neither succeded in maintaining the cold chain nor properly supervised the recent polio immunization campaign.

It was alleged that in a departure from the past practice, the polio programme this year was not run by the medical officers. Instead, vaccinators were made in charges of the teams, supposed to visit various parts of the district.

The vaccinators were not provided with transport, funds for which had been disbursed to the health department authorities in Jhang.

Ironically, the vaccinators were directed to use their bicycles to reach the length and breadth of such a vast district.

The department did not provide ice to the vaccinators to keep the vaccine at the required temperature, despite having funds at its disposal for the purpose.
