MUMBAI: Bollywood hunk John Abraham has been convicted of rash and negligent driving by a court in the Indian city of Mumbai, media reports said Friday.

Model-turned-actor Abraham was sentenced to 15 days in jail on Thursday but was immediately granted bail by the court to allow him to appeal.

The case dates back to 2006 when Abraham was involved in an accident while riding his motorbike, which hit a bicycle and injured two people in Mumbai.

The trial court recognised Abraham's “humane and kind” gesture of stopping and helping the victims to hospital despite his own injuries.

“You drove rashly, yet were kind to the injured,” metropolitan court's magistrate S. V. Kulkarni told Abraham, who was present during the proceedings, according to The Indian Express.

Abraham has a huge fan following in India, where he is also the brand ambassador of motorcycle manufacturers Yamaha. He launched a new version of their R15 model at the Delhi Auto Expo earlier this year.
