Councillor released after 25 days

MIANWALI, Sept 10: A senior civil judge on Tuesday ordered the release of a woman councillor who was booked under Section 295/A of the Blasphemy Act.

Aurat Foundation leader Rukhsana Bunyad had allegedly expressed some derogatory remarks at a seminar held at the press club. The remarks angered a journalist who asked her to take her words back. On her refusal, the journalist got a case registered against her.

Ms Bunyad’s pre-arrest bail was rejected by the additional district and sessions judge on Aug 15, and she was sent behind bars.

The complainant turned a deaf ear to all her pleas. However, some Ulema accepted her apology and urged the complainant to pardon her. On Tuesday, Senior Civil Judge Chaudhry Mohammad Yousaf ordered the police to release her.
