PESHAWAR: Nazim accused of swindling

Published September 8, 2002

PESHAWAR, Sept 7: Kohistan District Nazim was accused on Saturday of bypassing the district government rules and of embezzling the development funds.

Speaking at a news conference here at the press club, Nazimeen of the 19 union

councils of the district alleged that Nazim Maulana Obaidullah was violating the Local Government Ordinance 2001, by spending the funds without the consent of the members concerned.

Led by Bakht Biland and Ghulam Said, they alleged that most of the schemes for which the Nazim had withdrawn money from the district government budget were non-existent.

They explained that Mr Obaidullah had not floated any tender for the plans and embezzled Rs6 million on the pretext of spending the amount on repair work.

The Nazim had also got transferred an honest DCO from the district and appointed another officer of his own choice for the purpose, they alleged.

They said previous budget of the district council also had been passed without the approval of the Nazimeen and councillors. Though some of the members had wanted to raise objections to the schemes included in the Annual Development Programme, they had not been allowed to speak, they added.

The Nazimeen appealed to NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah to take steps for resolving the issue.
