Tahira-Denaz pair score upset victory

KARACHI, Sept 4: Rashidul Ghazi and Azwarul Haq put up a brilliant performance to grab top spot in the Super Bowl V11 at Aslam Bridge Hall. Thirty six leading pairs of the city took part in the hotly contested event.

Contesting from North- South position, Rashidul Ghazi and Azwarul Haq showed a remarkable performance and giving excellency treatment to the tricky boards and scored 56.82 percent for first position.

Masud Saleem pairing with Shahin Iqbal also battled for the top berth but their efforts fell short by 1.14 percent. They occupied second berth, followed by defending champion pair of Mazhar Jafri - Ehsan Abbasi who scored 54.73 per cent. Shaeen - Masud scored 55.68 Ziaullah - Hamid pair who remained at the leading position for most of the 12 rounds relegated to fourth position with a score of 53.79.

There was a big upset in the other direction. Facing a very stiff challenge from more experienced pairs, Dr Tahira Naqvi - Denaz Dubash a ladies pair claimed first position with a score of 62.50 percent.

Mohsin Chandna - Tehsin Gheewala finished on second berth with a score of 59. 66 percent.

Hasan Sajjad-Zafar Zaki pair led the group most of the time but failed in the closing stages to finish third followed by Ghufran Ashraf-Hasan Askari with 57.1 percent.—PPI
