MIRPURKHAS, Sept 4: Wapda chairman Lt-Gen Zulfiqar Ali Khan has said due to the lack of proper distribution of water in Sindh the province was facing a shortage of water, while sufficient water was flowing in the River Indus and added that 20,000 cusec water fell daily into the sea below the Kotri Barrage between Aug 15 and 31.

Talking to newsmen here on Wednesday, he said the Sindh Reni Canal, a seasonal canal, was being constructed to meet the water requirements of the province.

However, he said it would be constructed with the consent of the Sindhi people.

He told that the project of Reni Canal was under consideration since 1987, when the Sindh government had prepared this project and sent it to the federal government and added that 412,000 acres of barren land in Sindh would be brought under cultivation with this project.

He said the consultants would be appointed for this project who would seek the opinion of the elected representatives, irrigation experts and the masses.

He informed that millions of rupees were being spent for providing electricity to the people and improving the system.

He said that work on another 132kv high-tension line between Sanghar and Mirpurkhas and 66kv line between Digri to Naokot was in progress while the construction work of the Mirwah Gorchani gird station was near its completion.

GUNNED DOWN: A Pakistan Air Force official was shot dead by masked robbers at an auto shop at Jameel Shaheed Road, here on Wednesday.

Shahid Rehman, 50, a store in charge of the PAF, posted at the Sindhri Air base, was purchasing spare parts from Mehran Autos shop at Jameel Shaheed Road, when three unidentified armed motorcyclists opened fire at him, as a result , he died on the spot and the accused escaped.

The shops at Jameel Shaheed road were closed in protest.

His body was removed to the Civil Hospital, Mirpurkhas, for the post-mortem.

ELECTION BODY: The Sindh government has set up a committee at the district level to supervise election activities.

The committee, comprising district Nazim, DCO and DPO, will ensure implementation of the code of conduct prepared by the Election Commission.

This was disclosed by Mirpurkhas DPO Mohammad Amin Yousufzai while speaking at a meet-the-press programme at the press club here on Monday.

He said law and order would be maintained during the electioneering.

The DPO also announced to set up 15 centres in the city to improve police performance.
