ISLAMABAD, Aug 28: Extraordinary security measures will be taken in and around the capital on the occasion of the first anniversary of September 11, interior ministry sources informed Dawn.

They said security and intelligence agencies had warned of possible terrorist attacks on “soft targets”, including market places and gas stations.

The foreigners and UN officials, sources said, had been warned by their respective governments and the UN security staff to take personal security measures and keep their visibility in public places to a minimum.

In the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks, Pakistan’s active participation as a coalition partner in the global war against terrorism has made the country susceptible to terrorist attacks, sources said.

The three terrorist attacks which took place in and around the capital earlier in the year were all termed as a reaction to Pakistan’s participation in the war on terrorism, sources said.

In view of the intelligence reports, sources said, the provincial and capital police chiefs, heads of the security agencies and the interior ministry officials would chalk out a comprehensive plan to deal with the threat.
