KARACHI, Aug 25: Observance of traffic laws and exhibition of a tolerant behaviour towards others can help reduce causalities on roads drastically, DIG traffic Saud Ahmed said on Sunday.

He was leading a walk organized by the traffic police and the capital city police in collaboration with the citizen’s coordination committee, from Boat Basin to Helipad, Clifton. Inspector-general of police Syed Kamal Shah also joined the walk from “Do Talwar”.

The IG appreciated the initiative taken by the police to create awareness about traffic laws to control the increasing number of road accidents.

Saud Ahmed, talking to this news agency, said a majority of traffic accidents were due to reckless driving, intolerant behaviour of drivers and violation of traffic rules.

“If traffic rules are followed by drivers, hundreds of lives can be saved,” he added.

The DIG traffic maintained that the participation of schoolchildren in the walk was very significant as they were the most effective part of the “Walk A Cause” programme, demanding from their fellow citizens to take care of them while driving on the roads.

Moreover, he added, they are the future drivers and any role in creating awareness about the traffic laws at this age will go with them throughout their live, making them more responsible drivers.

He said violation of traffic rules by minibus and bus drivers was a major source of embarrassment, but efforts were being made to make them more responsible.

He appealed to people to observe traffic laws for their own interest and safety of others.

He added that traffic signals should be obeyed, vehicles should be driven in lanes and indicators should be kept in order for their proper use.—APP
