FAISALABAD, Aug 24: Around 200 candidates filed nomination papers for 11 national and 22 provincial assembly seats in the district till 8:00pm.

The prominent political figures who filed papers include former federal ministers—Mian Zahid Sarfraz (PML-J), Raja Nadir Pervez (PML-N) and Nasir Ali Khan Baloch (PML-QA).

The former provincial ministers are Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan (PPP), Badaruddin Chaudhry (PPP), Amanullah Khan (Millat Party) and Sahibzada Fazil Karim (PML-N).

Former parliamentary secretaries Chaudhry Zaheeruddin Khan, ex-MPA and Samundri tehsil Nazim Farooq Saeed Khan, Saddar ex-Nazim Misbahuddin Zaigham and ex-MPAs, Raja Riaz, Safdar Shakir, Rana Ullah, Rana Muhammad Afzal and Fazal Husain Rahi, also submitted their papers.

Traditional rush was seen at the offices of returning officers.

RECOUNTING: Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal, who lost the election of Tehsil Municipal Administration, was declared successful after the recounting on Saturday.

In May 2001, the election were held in which Misbahuddin Zaigham retained the seat of TMA Nazim with just two votes more than that of Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal.

Chaudhry Afzal approached the Supreme Court of Pakistan for recounting of votes. The SC directed the election tribunal of Gojra to conduct recounting.

During recounting, Muhammad Afzal succeeded in getting two votes more than Zaigham’s.

Interestingly, Mr Zaigham and his deputy Dr Muhammad Yaseen had already resigned from their offices to contest the election. Misbahuddin had filed his nomination papers for NA-75 as PML-N candidate while Dr Yaseen had filed papers for PP-63 on the PML-QA ticket.
