Poultry becomes costlier

Published November 9, 2001

KARACHI, Nov 8: As winter sets in, the demand for eggs go up pushing the prices up to Rs33 from Rs30 a dozen in the last one week.

With rise in the demand, the poultry dealers report a reduction in production which is another cause for price rise.

On November 1, egg prices were quoted at Rs30 a dozen. In September it was being retailed at Rs25.

Similarly, the price of poultry live bird showed a rise of Rs6 to Rs54 a kg from Rs48 on November 1. In September, poultry live bird was selling at Rs46.

As a result of this, the price of poultry meat is now being quoted at Rs85 a kg as compared to Rs84 a week back. Meat was being sold at Rs81 a kg in September.

Convener, Market Development Committee, Karachi Wholesale Poultry Association (KWPA), Kamal Siddiqui said that the fall in production coupled with slight fall in temperature has resulted in price hike of poultry products.

He said outbreak of various winter diseases has also caused mortality of a number of birds in poultry farms in Sindh which has created shortage in the markets.

Kamal said that prices are expected to remain under pressure in coming week till the production from the farms is improved.
