ISLAMABAD, Aug 20: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Khalid Ranjha has said the democratic government after the October elections would be powerful and the elections would establish real democracy in the country.

Replying to questions at the ‘APP Forum’ here, he said the prime minister would be the chief executive of the country with full powers.

He said the prime minister would enjoy all the powers enshrined in the Constitution.

Replying to a question about the National Security Council, he said it should have no intrusive powers or no authority over and above the parliament.

He said the NSC would provide a platform to all the players of power in the country to exchange views, ideas and opinions to strengthen democratic process, and added that it would not be any sort of ultra-constitutional or ultra-parliamentary institution.

The minister said genuine consultations had been held on the proposed constitutional amendments with the journalists, intellectuals, lawyers and other concerned sections of the society.

The government would make these amendments strictly in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court which had allowed and authorised the government to do so, Ranjha said.

He categorically said that no “person-specific” amendment would be made in the Constitution and all amendments would be state-specific for a genuine and sustainable democratic system in the country.
