KARACHI: PPP seeks clarification

Published August 21, 2002

KARACHI, Aug 20: The Pakistan People’s Party has sought firm and written clarification from the Election Commission about the controversy over the need of submitting party certificate at the time of filing nominations.

According to sources, the PPP’s acting secretary general Raza Rabbani has verbally conveyed to the EC officials that his interpretation of the conditionality is that political parties can nominate more than one person from one seat.

The sources say that according to his interpretation the party certificate should be open-ended and not candidate-specific. The parties have the right to make a final choice from among those candidates who mention the party affiliations after the finalisation of the list of candidates and request the award of symbol to them by the Election Commission.
