GNA in a fix over NA-187

BAHAWALPUR, Aug 18: The adjustment on national assembly seat (NA-187) in tehsil Khairpur Tamewali will be a poser for the Grand National Alliance.

The main contenders from NA-187 are former MNA Mian Riaz Husain Peerzada from the Millat Party and ex-minister Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi from the PML(QA). They are old political rivals of the area and claim majority of votes in their respective localities of Khairpur Tamewali.

The PPP high-ups might not field any candidate in NA-187, Khairpur Tamewali, as District Nazim Tariq Cheema wanted Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi to be elected.

Sardar Farooq Laghari wants alliance backing for Mian Riaz Husain Peerzada. The ex-MNA had parted with the PPP when Benazir Bhutto was the prime minister and had supported Leghari, the then president.

It is learnt that Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi on Saturday called on Punjab PML(QA) President Chaudhry Pervez Elahi in Lahore and the latter assured him that the PML would accommodate him in Khairpur.

Some of Gardezi’s opponents have reportedly aired that he was also making efforts for contacts with former PML chief Mian Nawaz Sharif for the PML-N ticket.

In 1997, Mian Nawaz Sharif had developed sore relations with Syed Gardezi after withdrawing party ticket from him. However, it is claimed Gardezi had revived terms with Nawaz Sharif through former MPA Samiullah Chaudhry.

Owing to the shortage of eligible candidates, the PML(N) leaders were reportedly considering to field Begum Tehmina Daultana in Khairpur Tamewali NA constituency.

If Pervez Elahi’s group could not adjust with Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi at Khairpur Tamewali, then Mr Gardezi might be awarded ticket by PML(N) in place of ex-MNA Mian Aqeelur Rahman.

Meanwhile, Bahawalpur District returning officer Badaruz Zaman Chattha has assigned the task of receiving nomination papers from Aug 19 (today) to additional district and sessions judges for five national assembly seats of the district.

KILLED: Three people were killed while 15 others injured in an accident on Hasilpur Road on Sunday.

Reports said a coach, coming from Khairpur Tamewali, overturned while trying to save a cyclist.

Shagufta, an MA student, Khizar Hayat, 11, and Allah Ditta died on the spot.
