Naseer, Sumaira smash records

ISLAMABAD, Aug 16: Naseer Ahmad of Army set a new marathon record Friday while Sumaira Zahoor broke the 1500m mark as both were selected to represent Pakistan at next month’s Asian Games in Busan following trials held at the Jinnah Stadium.

Naseer clocked 2 hours, 21 minutes and 15 seconds to create the record and Sumaira ran her distance in four minutes and 37 seconds for her mark.

Other athletes selected for the Sept 29-Oct 14 Games were Abdul Rashid (Railways, 110m hurdles), Allah Ditta (Army, 400m hurdles) and marathoner Waris Masih of Navy.

Apart from Sumaira who will also be competing in the 800m, the other female athlete selected was Sajida Ramzan, an 800m runner.

The selection committee of the Pakistan Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF) which met after the trials under the chairmanship of Brig Khalid Sajjad Khokhar, also named Group Capt. Ahmed Saeed Anjum (PAF) and Ch. Muhammad Siddique (Punjab) as manager and coach respectively.
