PESHAWAR, Aug 9: Customs Intelligence foiled an attempt of smuggling arms and ammunition from tribal area to down country on Thursday night.  The officials claimed that weapons were being smuggled to Punjab for terrorist activities.

A press release issued here on Friday said that the Director-General of Customs Intelligence, Islamabad office, received specific information that arms and ammunition would be smuggled from the tribal area to Punjab. After the tip-off, the Customs Intelligence, Peshawar office, was directed to encircle the Khairabad bridge.

A vehicle bearing Registration No-IDD-8317 and coming from Peshawar was signalled to stop, but the driver ignored the signal.

The raiding party chased the vehicle and intercepted the vehicle near Khairabad Bridge but the driver escaped from the scene.

On search the authorities recovered 22 rifles of different bores, 14 pistols of 30 bore, 4775 rounds, 25 magazines and one set of telescope.
