KARACHI, Aug 9: The Pakistan People’s Party, Sindh, has reiterated its demand for the formation of a national consensus interim government to hold free and fair elections as, according to it, fair and transparent elections could not be held in the presence of the Musharraf government.

The party re-emphasised the demand through one of the resolutions adopted at an emergency meeting of its executive committee here on Friday with its provincial president Nisar Ahmad Khuhro in the chair.

The meeting reviewed the overall political situation in the country, including formation of the PPP Parliamentarians party, alleged harassment of the party’s potential candidates for the October elections, preparations for according a rousing welcome to party chairperson Benazir Bhutto on her return, and took various decisions.

Through another resolution, the meeting expressed its unflinching confidence on the leadership of Ms Bhutto and reiterated its pledge that conscientious people of Sindh with the joint struggle of their brothers in other provinces and Azad Kashmir and with the might of the masses would reinstall Ms Bhutto as prime minister for the third time.

The meeting resolved to give every sacrifice for upholding integrity of the federation, the constitution and rule of law in the country and maintained that snatched rights of workers and farmers would be restored and accountability would be initiated against those responsible for tarnishing the image of the armed forces.

The committee condemned the reported interference by the governor of Sindh, federal and provincial ministers and personnel of secret agencies in planning pre-poll rigging and maintained that under a secret plan special teams, consisting of secret agencies’ officials, had been formed who were handling half-a- dozen state-sponsored parties and regional organizations under instructions of the National Reconstruction Bureau.

The meeting warned the government against any attempt to keep Ms Bhutto away from the people.
