KARACHI, Aug 5: Environmentalists have expressed their deep concern regarding the pollution of the Keenjhar (Kalri) Lake, a prominent sanctuary for a wide variety of water fowl and important for the water supply to Karachi.

Keenjhar, a fresh water lake which once offered a pristine look, has presently turned into a filthy water reservoir where bus and wagon owners can be frequently seen washing their vehicles besides disposing of their oil into the lake.

The deterioration in the water quality is also severely impacting the habitat of the lake. The constant decline in the number of birds coming to the lake almost year round is again a serious concern.

Unfortunately, the indifference on the part of the authorities concerned has turned the pollution of the lake into a free-for-all for practically everyone visiting the site.

The Sindh Tourism and Development Corporation (STDC) which, though charging for rooms and tents allotted to the visitors, takes little care to ensure that visitors do not throw garbage into the lake.

Environmentalists were equally concerned about the scenario at Haleji lake, where in violation of international laws, including the Ramsar Convention — to which Pakistan is also a signatory — land could be seen being dug, making pathways for the convenience of nearby villagers. —APP
