Ugandan official reinstated

MANCHESTER, Aug 2: Boxing official David Agong of Uganda was reinstated on Thursday after he complained about being suspended from the Commonwealth Games.

Agong was suspended indefinitely Tuesday after Amateur International Boxing Association president Anwar Chowdhry said the Ugandan had made “political decisions” during a light-welterweight fight last Saturday.

Agong has denied making political decisions, however, and has demanded an apology.

The bout concerned was between Kevin Anderson of Scotland and Pakistan’s Asghar Ali Shah on Saturday, which was won 29-18 by the Scottish boxer, organisers said in a statement.

A spy camera is used during boxing matches, which means the AIBF can monitor each blow and respond to how the judge reacts.

The judging of boxing has been controversial at major events before, notably at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.—Reuters
