LAHORE, July 31: An accountability court on Wednesday sent an alleged defaulter of the National Industrial Co-operative Finance Cooperation Azizul Haq Qureshi to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) for treatment on a NAB application.

The NAB had pleaded the court to send Qureshi to the PIC in judicial custody since he had complained of a cardiac disorder. The NAB further pleaded the court to reserve its right to get the accused back to physical custody once he got treatment from the PIC. The court allowed the application with an observation that the NAB could get the physical custody of the accused back upon his discharge from the PIC.

As alleged by the NAB the accused procured loan from the NICFC through different sanctions from 1982 to 1984. According to the NAB, the loan was obtained in a flagrant violation of rules as he did not provide any collateral or security against the loan. On Nov 6, 1991, when the co-operatives became defunct the total amount due to Aziz stood at Rs20.36 million.

After adding the mark-up rate of 20 per cent the total liability of the accused as on June 30, 2002, had been calculated to the tune of Rs75.63 million.
