PESHAWAR, July 20: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah was informed on Saturday that almost 80 per cent of the encroachments, including four petrol pumps, along the GT Road section in the city from the Ring Road flyover to Sooray  Bridge have been removed and the work would be completed in a couple of days.

The governor, after presiding over a meeting at the Governor’s House, went to the Ring Road flyover junction on the GT Road and inspected the widening and re-construction of the road in the city.

He was accompanied by Administration Secretary Ghulam Hussain and CD&MD Director-General Malik Saad.

Expressing satisfaction over the removal of encroachments along the road, he expressed his desire that the clean-up operation should be extended to other parts of the city.

The governor inspected the sites for the construction of flyovers at the Rehman Baba Square and on the western side of the Jail Bridge.

During the meeting, Iftikhar Hussain was informed that Rail Co, a subsidiary of Pakistan Railway, had been mobilized for the construction of railway bridges on either side of the Sooray Bridge.

For the purpose,  Rs20 million have been handed over to the company.

He was told a primary school had been shifted and work on the construction of a new one had started, whereas Rs25 million and Rs6 million had been given to Peshawar Electric Supply Corporation (Pesco) and Sui  Northern Gas Pipelines, respectively, for shifting of their infrastructure from the site.

Besides, Rs1.55 million have been given to Pakistan Telecommunication Company for shifting of its optic-fibre from the adjoining green belt.

ACS Jehangir  Bashir, Works and Services Secretary Safdar Hussain, Administration Secretary Ghulam Hussain and Provincial Assembly Secretary Nazir Ahmed attended the meeting.
