SRINAGAR, Nov 3: At least 22 people were killed and 30 others injured in a road accident in occupied Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
The victims were travelling in a passenger bus which fell into a gorge when it failed to make a sharp turn on a hill at Saderkote, near Sumbhal township, 40 kilometres north of Srinagar.
Two days of rain and snow have left roads slippery across the held state.
The police spokesman said 18 bodies had been recovered from the gorge. Several people were missing.
Some of the injured were taken to the a hospital in Baramulla, from where 10 people in a serious condition were transferred to a better-equipped hospital in Srinagar.
Police and paramilitary forces were at the scene but heavy snow impeded the rescue operation.
ROAD CLOSED: Heavy rainfall has made the authorities in held Kashmir close for months the main highway leading to Kargil.
“Lots of snow has accumulated on the mountainous road making it unfit for travelling,” an Indian government spokesman said. The road will be opened in April, he said.—AFP
