Omer walks away with Governors Cup

LAHORE, Oct 7: Omer Azeem of Lahore Gymkhana (handicap 17), with an excellent net score of 16 under-par 200 over 54 holes, captured the Governor Cup golf tournament at the Lahore Gymkhana Sunday.

Omer had done the first round in 70 and the second in 65 net strokes. On the last day Sunday, he completed the third round also in a fine net score of 65.

He did both the outer and inner round in identical scores of 41, each. Omer’s only birdie was on the 15th hole but lost a stroke, each on the first, second, third, sixth, seventh, ninth, 10th, 13th and 16th besides also losing two strokes on the 14th hole.

Mohsin Anwar, brother of Omer, also of Lahore Gymkhana (handicap 10) grabbed the runner-up prize, with a net score of 204. He completed the first round in 69 net, the second round in 63 and on the last day Mohsin did the third round in the net score of 72. Mohsin carded the front nine holes in 37 and the back nine holes in 45 strokes.

Ghayyur Abbas Zaidi, also of Lahore Gymkhana (handicap 10), finished in third position with a net score of six over-par 210. He did the first round in 68, the second in 73 and the third round in a net score of 69.

Shahid Javed Khan of Punjab Golf Association and WAPDA (handicap 0) won the gross event of the tournament, with a score of one over-par 217. Shahid completed the three rounds in 71, 73 and one over-par 73. He did the front nine holes in 34 and the back nine holes in 39 strokes.

Shahid had birdies on the seventh, 12th and 16th holes but lost a stroke, each on the 13th, 14th and 14th holes. He double bogeyed on the 11th hole.

Vaqas Ahmad of Rawalpindi (handicap 0), who had been joint leader with Shahid on the first two days, was relegated to the third spot in the gross event on the concluding day. Vaqas completed the 54 holes in two over-par 218. Vaqas did the first round in 71, the second in 73 and the third in 74 strokes. He completed the outer round in 35 and the inner round in 39 strokes. Vaqas had birdied on the seventh and 16th hole but bogeyed on the third, 13th, 14th and 18th holes.

Sameer Iftikhar also of Lahore Gymkhana (handicap 3), with an aggregate of 12 over-par 228 finished third in the gross event.

Seniors: Gross: Winner: Col Humayun Rashid (Lahore Gymkhana); runner-up: Dr Zafar Aziz Khan (Lahore Gymkhana).

Net: Winner: Air-Commodore Z. I. Ahmad (Lahore Gymkhana); runner-up: Ijaz Ahmad (Lahore Gymkhana).

Juniors: Gross: Winner: Ali Khanzada (Peshawar); Salman Khawar (Lahore Gymkhana).

Net: Winner: Haider Atique (Rawalpindi); runner-up: Salman Khawar (Lahore Gymkhana).

Ladies: Gross: Winner: Jamila Jabbar (WAPDA); runner-up: Mrs Tahira Nazir.

Net: Winner: Mrs Ayesha Amin (Lahore Gymkhana); runner-up: Mrs Afzal Shami (Rwalpindi).

Maximum birdies: Shahid Javed Khan (11).
