GUJRANWALA, July 8: Transporters of Naushera Virkan, Tetley, Maraliawala, Sheikhupura, Ghumanwala and Khiali continued their strike against the levy of toll tax by Naushera Virkan and Gujranwala Saddar tehsil councils on Monday.

The Naushera Virkan tehsil council had imposed toll tax of Rs10 per trip per vehicle at two places on Tetley intersection on the main Sheikhupura Road and Naushera Virkan. Similarly, the Gujranwala Saddar tehsil council also fixed Rs5 per trip per vehicle at Khiali Adda on the Sheikhupura Road.

Owners of public transport vehicles alleged that the contractor and his men were overcharging and humiliating them. They pledged that they would continue their strike till the withdrawal or fixation of per day toll tax instead of per trip.

Passengers strongly protested against transporters for arbitrarily raising 50 per cent fares on the Naushera Virkan route and demanded that the district government and regional transport authority should take stern action against them.

Rukhsana Rani of Sialkot was married to Muhammad Arif of Gilwala village, Ahmad Nagar, a few years ago. Arif used to beat her for bringing meagre dowry. On the day of occurrence, he thrashed her and then strangled her with the help of his accomplices. Later, he announced that she died of her natural death and laid to rest in the village graveyard without waiting her parents.

The deceased’s father, Muhammad Younas, on suspicion moved the district and sessions judge with the plea to exhume the body to determine the real cause of her daughter’s death. The judge ordered to exhume the body and conduct the post-mortem. The report revealed that she was raped before being strangled. The accused however managed to escape when the body of the deceased was being exhumed.

Ahmad Nagar police have registered a case against Muhammad Arif and his accomplices Khalid, Saeed and Muhammad Nasir and are investigating.
