ISLAMABAD, Nov 2: Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou on Friday stressed the need for involving neighbouring countries in the process of establishing a broad-based government in Afghanistan.

Briefing press after meeting President Gen Pervez Musharraf here, he said creating stability and order in Afghanistan was “something which is paramount to the whole region.”

“Stability certainly has to be built upon a broad-based representative government in Afghanistan,” he said.

Quoting experience of his own country with regard to regional conflicts, he called for involving the “neighbourhood” to help in the process of bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He said he was in Pakistan to support the effort of Pakistan and President Musharraf in the crisis.

This crisis on the one hand called for eliminating terrorism but at the same time deal with wide-ranging humanitarian crisis, he said. The minister said he had discussed with President Musharraf and his Pakistani counterpart, Abdul Sattar, the humanitarian efforts for the refugees.

He said some of his advisors would stay in Pakistan to work out details of getting international aid into Afghanistan.—APP
