KARACHI, April 14 A 25-year-old man was killed on Tuesday when a fast-moving water tanker ran over him at Islam Chowk in Orangi Town, police and witnesses said.

The Pakistan Bazaar police said that the victim, identified as Mohammed Usman, a resident of Chisti Nagar, Orangi, was on his way on his motorcycle when the water carrier knocked him down.

The witnesses said that the young man, a factory worker, was killed instantly and his body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal proceedings.

They said that the onlookers caught the tanker driver, who was then beaten by the people before he was handed over to the police.

The police said that they reached the spot immediately and took the driver into custody.

They said that a case (FIR 173/2009) was registered against the 25-year-old water tanker driver, Nawab, son of Mohammed Saleem, under Section 320 (causing death by reckless driving) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim`s brother, Mohammed Sohail.

The police said that the water tanker was also impounded.

116 cellphones, 47 vehicles taken away on Monday

As many as 116 cellular phone handsets and 47 vehicles - 38 motorcycles and nine cars - were taken away on Monday in different parts of the city.

Officials at the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee told Dawn that in 67 armed holdups committed across the city the bandits snatched at gunpoint 54 cellular phones, 10 motorcycles and three cars.

The officials said that the bandits also deprived their victims of cash and other valuables such as gold rings and chains.

Besides, they said, 62 mobile phones, 28 motorcycles and six automobiles were stolen in different parts of the city on Monday.

The CPLC officials said that at least 36 cellular phones, 41 motorcycles and 13 cars were taken away by the evening on Tuesday across the city.

They said that 22 mobiles phones were snatched at gunpoint within the police limits of Ferozeabad, Khokrapar, Shah Faisal Colony, Artillery Maidan, Aziz Bhatti, Chakiwara, Federal B Area, Gulberg, Jauharabad, Malir City, Model Colony, Shahrah-i-Noorjahan, Sir Syed Town, SITE and Taimuria.

The CPLC officials said that 14 other cellular phones were stolen in the police jurisdictions of Azizabad, Bahadurabad, Boat Basin, Defence, Garden, Jackson, Jamshed Quarters, Korangi, Mauripur, Pirabad, Sachal, Sharifabad, Steel Town and Taimuria.

They said that bandits snatched at gunpoint at least 13 motorcycles in the police precincts of Surjani town, Mochkoh, Korangi Industrial Area, Sharifabad, Pak Colony, New Karachi, Bilal Colony, Taimuria, Shahrah-i-Noorjahan and Mithadar.

The CPLC officials said that 28 motorcycles were stolen in the police areas of Saeedabad, Saudabad, Ibrahim Haideri, Model Colony, Frere, Clifton, Sohrab Goth, Gulshan-i-Memaar, Aziz Bhatti, New Town, Mehmoodabad, Soldier Bazaar, Ferozeabad, Baloch Colony, Pak Colony, Nazimabad, New Karachi Industrial Area, Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, Preedy, Saddar, Nabi Bux, Kharadar, Risala, Shah Faisal Colony and Sharea Faisal.

They said that the six cars were hijacked within the police limits of Saeedabad, Azizabad, Sachal, Aziz Bhatti and Sharea Faisal.

The CPLC officials said that seven automobiles were stolen within the police jurisdictions of Defense, Taimuria, Mominabad, Preedy, Airport and Sharea Faisal.
