PESHAWAR, June 28: A non-governmental organisation has asked philanthropists to resolve the problems of prisoners in various jails of the province.

The administration assistant of Sharp (Society for Human Rights and Prisoners Aid), Liaquat Ali Chamkani, said here on Friday that prisoners were facing different problems specially that of drinking water and  fans.

He was speaking at a ceremony arranged for handing over ceiling fans to the Inspector General of Prisons, Abdul Rauf, for Haripur prison. The teams of the organization recently visited Haripur and Kohat prisons where they found that there was shortage of fans in Haripur prison.

Mr Chamkani said the members of his organization in Islamabad collected donations and made arrangement for donating 20 fans. Moreover, he added, they would make arrangements for installing water coolers in Haripur prison and water pumps for women prisoners in Kohat prison.

The IGP, Mr Rauf said they needed material support from philanthropists and NGOs, which would benefit prisoners. He expressed the hope that the support of Sharp would continue with the prison department. He pointed out that when the demolition work started in Peshawar prison they had to send prisoners from Peshawar to other prisons which caused many problems for prisoners and the jail staff. However, he added the government was making efforts for overcoming these problems. He said with the construction of new prison in Jallozai burden on other prisons would be reduced to a great extent.
