PESHAWAR, June 24: A juvenile court here on Monday sentenced a teenager to two-year imprisonment and fined him Rs20,000 for drug pushing.
However, the court, presided over by District and Sessions Judge Ziauddin Khattak, ordered that Waqas, 13, should be released on probation on furnishing two sureties of Rs3 lakh.
Mathra police had recovered some contraband from Waqas, son of Zubair of Lahore, over 12 months ago and arrested him. He was charged under section 9 of the Control of Narcotics Substance Act, 1997.
The court observed that keeping in view the tender age of the boy, it would be appropriate to release him on probation.
The court, which was delegated powers of a juvenile court two months ago under the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance, maintains a separate register for the juvenile offenders. It has also directed that the cases of children should be submitted before the court for their early disposal.
