LAHORE, Oct 31: A clean sweep by the well-backed animals in the mid-week Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Sunday brought thrill to the connoisseurs of the sport Wednesday.

All the six events were held in the sprinting distance of five furlongs. A large crowd enjoyed the races in a cool atmosphere made pleasant by the mellow sunshine.

The odds-on favourite bay filly Deep river stormed to victory in the opener to give the favourite-backers a fine start. In the subsequent events also, the fancied horses maintained their superiority much to the delight of the punters.

Makhdoom Syed Ali Raza’s bay filly Royal Soul clinched the feature event, hacking the field of 15 runners. The Mangla Plate class VII division IV & V combined handicap race was the sixth of the afternoon and was won by Royal Soul as she liked.

Royal Soul is a thoroughbred daughter of Al trui-out-of-Annabelle and she defeated the joint blue roan colt Afnan by about three lengths.

The bay gelding Burq Raftar finished third about two lengths behind while the filly Iram State completed the frame one-and-a-quarter lengths further back.

Partnered by the riding boy Qamar Zaman, Royal Soul clocked one minute 4 1/5 seconds. The filly is trained by Al berooni.

The victory of Royal Soul gave Qamar Zaman a fine double as he had earlier, piloted home the chestnut colt Mon Soon during the fifth and supporting event of the day.
