Petitions dismissed

ISLAMABAD, June 17: Two writ petitions challenging the May 2 polls of the Islamabad Cricket Association (ICA) were dismissed Monday by Justice Mohammad Akhtar Shabbir of the Lahore High Court (Rawalpindi Bench) and a stay order that prevented the official announcement of the election results was also withdrawn.

Mohammad Ishaq Bhatti of the Rizvi Group was elected the president of the ICA with Irfan Manzoor and Hassan Asghar, also of the same group, being elected secretary and treasurer respectively.

However, Mohammad Yousaf of the losing Jawad Group, presidential candidate Kh. Mohammad Mustafa and presidents of Jinnah and CRA (Away) clubs, Zahid Mahmood and Ch. Abdul Ghaffar had filed two writ petitions challenging the ICA elections.

Advocate Dr Babar Awan, representing the respondents argued that it had now become “an unfortunate and unhealthy culture” of not accepting the election results, be these national, provincial or those conducted at the ICA level.
