PESHAWAR, June 17: The Nowshera Councillors Alliance has asked the provincial government to help the opposition councillors of 47 union councils who are being denied development funds.

Speaking at a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club, alliance convener Haji Zakir Hussain Piracha said the unfair attitude of the Nazims had forced them to form the alliance and protect the rights of their voters.

Mr Piracha, who hails from UC Nizampur, said they wanted to table no-confidence moves against some of the Nazims, but they dropped the idea because the movers and seconders would have to tender resignations if the attempts failed. He asked the government to remove this clause from the Local Government Act.

He alleged that most of the Nazims had become partners of the contractors to take bribe from them. They wasted one year in organizing receptions and dinners, and did not initiate any development work in most of the union councils, he added.

He elaborated that Nazims had failed to start work on 75 per cent of the reviewed development schemes. The Nazims had ignored the opposition councillors in allocation of development funds, he added.

Haji Sher Mohammad Khan, Ajmali Khan, Liaquat Ali Khattak, Haji Amanullah, Zaridad Khan and Zafar Khan were present.
