Qayyum calls for US mediation

UNITED NATIONS, June 11: Former prime minister of Azad Kashmir, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan said on Monday that he believes that resolution of the Kashmir dispute can only be achieved through intra-Kashmiri dialogue through the intervention of the United States.

“There is just no other way out,” said the Kashmir Committee chairman, who is visiting the US to sensitize the American and United Nations officials about the need to resolve the dispute.

He told a press conference: “It is all up to India now. I think it will wait until the Kashmir elections are over before beginning a process.”

However, he said, the process of intra-Kashmiri dialogue could only happen “with the assistance of the US and the UN.”

Asked as to what would force India to hold such a dialogue, Sardar Qayyum said: “There is no other choice. We have learnt that you cannot go to war. The international community would not allow it.”

Former information minister, Mushahid Hussain, a member of the committee, told reporters that during their visit to Washington the committee met US lawmakers and opinion builders at Capitol Hill. He said that the KC members met the Washington Post and Washington Times editorial boards.
