AHMEDABAD, June 9: One person was killed and at least 20 injured as fresh violence erupted on Sunday in the Indian city of Ahmedabad following the arrest of two Muslims, a senior police official said.

According to Satish Verma, the additional commissioner of police in Ahmedabad, about 500 people attacked a police station after the authorities arrested the two Muslims, charged with instigating communal violence two months ago.

“The crowd pelted stones and crude bombs at the police and we used mild force to disperse them,” Verma said, adding that the police had fired about 20 tear gas shells during the disturbance. Twenty people, including five policemen were injured in the clash.

Crowds brandishing swords were seen running towards the area of the violence, a witness said. Units of the anti-riot Rapid Action Force and troops belonging to the paramilitary Border Security Force had been rushed to the area, Verma said.

However, they were not able to save a Hindu truck driver who was pulled out of his vehicle and stoned to death by the rampaging mob. A petrol station on a busy highway in Jethalpur, about 10km from Gujarat’s commercial capital Ahmedabad, was torched by another mob on Sunday, police said.—AFP
