MUSIC: zeb and haniya

Published September 5, 2008

The Zeb and Haniya band is a project started by two musicians, Zebunnisa Bangash and Haniya Aslam. Zeb and Haniya`s brand of folksy music draws on that Pashtun heritage and can easily fit into the province`s longstanding Sufic tradition. The cousins, both 29, make up one of Pakistans hottest pop duos. The duo has performed at the US Embassy in Islamabad and as part of the line-up at MTV Pakistan`s Independence Day concert in Karachi, which has the largest Pashtun population in Pakistan.

This album kicks off with the title song “Chup”. Then there is a song “Paimana” in which both singers have performed well because it is a Pashtu song. Another song called “Chal diye” is a melodious track. A video of the song “Aietbar” has also been launched. An emotional number “Rona chor diya” is also included in the CD. Other numbers include, “Kabhi na kabhi”, “Ahaan” and “Seh na sakay”. The album concludes with the song “Ban ke teri jogan”. It`s a sufi track and according to my judgment, the best song of the CD.

The album is simply a remarkable effort and it will take you on a journey of emotions. So don`t just sit and think, get up and go buy yourself an album of sensational Zeb and Haniya!
