‘War no solution’

Published October 31, 2001

LAHORE, Oct 30: The National Workers Party has demanded immediate halt of bombing on Afghanistan by America and Britain.

The demand was made in a resolution adopted at a party convention held at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday under the chairmanship of C.R. Aslam.

The resolution said both the incidents of terrorist attack on New York and Washington and the bombing of Afghanistan deserved condemnation. War could never solve any problem, particularly the one between the terrorists and the forces which had been encouraging terrorism in the world, it said.

The resolution said unless hegemony of a few big powers over the poor nations and tyranny were put to an end and the rights of the people of Palestine, Kashmir and other areas who were struggling for their independence and self-determination were granted, terrorism could never be eliminated.

Speaking at the convention, NWP chief Abid Minto said President Pervez Musharraf had taken a right decision to support the international coalition against terrorism. He said the government should take steps to ensure that there was a complete unity and solidarity among the people. The forces which were creating hatred in the fair name of Islam and exploiting the religion for political purposes should be discouraged.

He said America had itself encouraged Osama bin Laden and brought him to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet Union. He reminded the US of its past record when it had been toppling governments in various parts of the world and had armed intervention in Cuba, Korea, Vietnam and other countries.
