SUKKUR, April 28: Hundreds of residents of Kandhra, Tarai and Veenjho villages staged a protest demonstration on Sunday against the irrigation department and shortage of water particularly in Shakh No 130.
The protesters blocked the Kandhra-Tarai Road for about four hours.
According to the protesters, there is an acute shortage of water in the watercourses of their area due to which their crops have been destroyed.
They said that at Shakh 130, the people of the area arranged and installed lift machines, spending Rs50,000, which had been irrigating 5,000 acres of the area.
They, however, alleged that now the irrigation officials were demanding illegal gratification to run the lift machines.
RECOVERED: Two engineers of the irrigation department, who were kidnapped by a group of armed men on Friday night, were recovered by police after an encounter with the kidnappers near Kashmor on Sunday.
According to the DIG, operation, Syed Mushtaq Shah, after the kidnapping of the two engineers, police followed the kidnappers in the forest area.
After the encounter, which continued for one hour, the kidnappers fled leaving behind the hostages, Siddiq Solangi and Fiayaz Ahmed.
Meanwhile, the police arrested Abdul Ghafoor, Lakhmir Khoso and Jamil and recovered one Kalashnikov from their possession.
They had snatched a tractor from Tahir Khan, who informed the police. The police claimed they were arrested, along with tractor, after an encounter with the police near Tangwani.
GUTTED: Eleven houses were gutted in Bhutto Bhangwar village, near Bukshapur, on Sunday.
Some 250 mounds of wheat and households were turned to ashes and three buffaloes were burnt alive.
The villagers on self-help basis extinguished the fire.
THIEF KILLED: A thief was killed in an exchange of firing between the inmates of a house and thieves on Sunday morning in Baggo Khoso village, Jacobabad district.
Three thieves entered into the house when the inmates were in sleep. When the inmates woke up, the thieves tried to flee after firing. The inmates also opened fire and as a result Ghulam Haider was killed.
