ISLAMABAD, April 25: The condition of producing national identity card for casting vote in the referendum was waived through an amendment promulgated in the Referendum Order on Thursday.

The amendment empowers Nazims, Naib Nazims and government officers of Grade 17 to issue certificate which will be acceptable as substitute for the ID card.

The order was promulgated by Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf.

An official announcement said the chief executive of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan had made and promulgated the Referendum (Amendment) Order, 2002 which shall come into force at once and be deemed always to have come into force from April 9, 2002.

The amendment provides that where a citizen does not possess his ID card, he may produce before the presiding officer any of the following documents duly attested to prove his age and bearing his attested photograph to establish his identity: his service card issued by his employer; his international passport or an Aqama issued by a foreign sponsor or employer to a Pakistani expatriate in lieu of his passport; his motor vehicle driving licence; a certificate issued by the head of an educational institution, or a lecturer thereof; a certificate issued by a government official in BPS 17 or above; or a certificate issued by a Nazim or Naib Nazim of a local government.—PPI
