HYDERABAD, April 18: The UNICEF representative in Sindh, Dr Asif Aslam, has said that in collaboration with the Sindh health department, the WHO and UNICEF were monitoring the anti-polio campaign.

Talking to Dawn here on Wednesday, Dr Aslam said that in the districts of Sanghar and Hyderabad, some cases of polio had been witnessed.

He, however, appreciated the measures taken by the EDO (health) and district administration of Hyderabad to eradicate polio from the district.

During the three-day special campaign (April 16-18), Dr Aslam also visited the rural area of Baqar Khan Nizamani as well as Sanghar, Shahdadpur and Mirpurkhas and watched the anti-polio campaign teams at work at various health centres.

Dr Mohammad Ashfaq Khan, who played main role in the anti-polio campaign in Mirpurkhas, briefed him about the ongoing campaign.

He said that 543 teams had been constituted to administer polio drops door-to-door in 37 union councils whereas 15 fixed centres had also been established in Mirpurkhas district.

He said that along with polio drops, Vitamin-A capsules were also being given to the children up to five years of age.

The EDO (health), Mirpurkhas and Umerkot, Dr Illahi Bux Soomro, told the UNICEF representative that efforts were being made to completely eradicate polio from the area.

Dr Aslam stressed the need to improve the routine immunization programme.

He said the international community had acknowledged the political commitment in Sindh with regards to eradication of polio from the province.

SAU: The Sindh Agriculture University Tando Jam, announced on Thursday that the M.Sc supplementary examinations and other examinations from the 1st year to the 4th year, which were scheduled to be held from April 24, had been postponed and the next date of the examinations would be announced later on.

MUET: The MUET announced on Thursday that the pre-admissions test for the 3rd batch of the 2002-2003 session would be held on Oct 27.
