GUJRANWALA, April 11: Lists of graduate women councillors of district councils have been sought to give them important assignments in the new political set up.
Sources said here on Thursday the government had wanted to bring the educated class in the mainstream politics. For this purpose, special seats had already been announced for women besides enhancing their quota in national and provincial assemblies, they said.
The district coordinating officer has reportedly forwarded a list of 22 women councillors of Gujranwala district council having graduate and post graduate degrees.
Their names are: Najma Akhter, Shaheen Asad, Robina Kauser, Rehana Zahid, Ifat Yamin, Iram Saeed, Shaheen Banu, Farah Naz, Shazia Mushtaq, Sameena Rafiq, Meh Jabeen, Naseer Fatima, Saeeda Uzma, Nazia Ehsan, Ghulam Faizi, Farkhanda Naheed, Perveen Sheikh, Nazia Asif, Gulnaz Kishwer, Nasreen Abid, Fareeda Yasmin and Samina Zareen advocate.
THREE KILLED: Three people, including an elderly woman, were killed and a dozen others sustained injuries in road accidents in and around the city here on Thursday.
Muhammad Yaqoob of Alipur Chattha was on way to his village from Gujranwala along with his mother Jamila Bibi by motorcycle. Near the village, a speeding wagon hit them from behind, killing Jamila Bibi instantly and seriously injuring her son. He was rushed to the local Civil Hospital in critical condition.
A man, Bashir, was killed and a dozen others suffered serious wounds when a speeding bus crashed into a stationary tractor-trolley on the Naushera Road. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Qila Dedar Singh, and the local DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
A passerby, Muhammad Aslam of Eminabad Morr, was crushed to death by a speeding truck on the GT Road. He was crossing the road.
BOOKED: Kamoke police on Thursday booked Jamaat-i-Islami district amir Maulana Obaidur Rehman Madni and other leaders on various charges.
However, no arrest has so far been made.
They were charged with taking out a rally, blocking the road and chanting slogans against the government.
STRIKE: Traders of the Bank Square bazaar went on a shutter-down strike against the hooliganism of an armed group during a meeting here on Thursday.
Traders had held a panchayat meeting to resolve their dispute. In the meantime, the armed men attacked the participants of panchayat with kicks and fists and also tore apart their clothes.
Police arrested four outlaws Fazalur Rehman Baber, Khalid Ghafoor, Abid Ghafoor and Arshed Tarer and are investigating.
DECREES ISSUED: Local banking courts decided 209 cases and issued decrees to defaulters for the recovery of Rs138 million during the first quarter of the current year.
