KARACHI, April 5: As many as 3,439 drivers were arrested and jailed by the traffic police for reckless driving in the last three months, during a special campaign launched in the city on the directives of the Inspector General of Police, Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah.

The number of drivers arrested under Section 279 PPC was 2,121, while 1,318 drivers were booked under Section 99 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance.

During this period, 139,188 tickets were issued and fine amounting to over Rs2.8 million was imposed on drivers, of which Rs16.968 million were realized.

Fitness certificates of 2,717 vehicles were suspended, 1,264 taperecorders and 1,323 pressure horns were also seized.

The traffic police also took action against juvenile drivers and issued tickets to 1,868 of them. 11,506 vehicles were booked for presence of male passengers in the ladies compartment, 2,610 vehicles for having tinted glasses and tickets issued to 10,294 drivers for over-speeding during the same period.

The month-wise break-up shows that during January, the traffic police issued 32,503 tickets, arrested 1,210 drivers and imposed fine amounting to Rs4,611,300, of which Rs4,604,100 were realized.

During February, 20,689 tickets were issued, 419 drivers were arrested, fitness certificates of 1,257 vehicles were suspended, 109 taperecorders were seized and a fine of Rs3,420,600 was imposed of which Rs3,108,600 was recovered.

In March, the traffic police issued 85,996 tickets, 1,810 drivers were arrested, 1,080 taperecorders and 1,271 pressure horns were seized and 929 fitness certificates were suspended.
